A Day to Become Clouds with Two Islands
As a new piece in the “A Day to Become Clouds” series, this artwork was realized with the support of local residents, centering on an art exchange between elementary and junior high school students from Dongju Island in Taiwan and Ogi Island in Japan.
On a clear blue day, the children struck cloud-like poses, and their silhouettes were captured in cyanotype prints. Later, these children—the future bearers of both islands—“became clouds” once again, soaring high into the sky on a giant kite. This shared vision became a moment of joy celebrated together with many.

The Matsu Biennial is an art festival held since 2022 on the outlying Matsu Islands of Taiwan.
Its third edition in 2025 takes place under the theme “Pha jiu – Your Ocean, My Land”, featuring 74 works by curators and artists from nine countries and regions: Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Australia, the United States, Spain, and Canada.
Site-specific works are created in unique settings such as former military sites, coastal landscapes, and traditional villages, reflecting Matsu’s distinctive Min Dong culture, its Cold War history, and ongoing concerns and practices around ocean sustainability.
The Biennial not only marks a milestone in shaping the cultural identity of Matsu, but also aims to establish itself as a vital platform for art and international dialogue—connecting with leading curatorial communities across Asia and the world through the perspective of life on islands facing the sea.
